DNA Nucleotide Forks

In 1988, musician Susan Alexjander collaborated with biologist Dr. David Deamer on a project to discover what DNA sounds like.

They exposed DNA, the primary carrier of genetic information for all living organisms, to infrared light and measured the vibrational frequencies of the four base molecules which compose DNA: adenine, guanine, thymine and cytocine. They translated the resulting very high frequencies into audible vibrations, and programmed them into a synthesizer.

Alexjander discovered unexpected patterns which conform to western musical ratios such as octaves, major and minor thirds, and more. She used this tuning system and the notes it generated to create original compositions.

Distilling biological, infrared frequencies into sound has generated thought-provoking insights into the harmonic fabric of DNA. Some listener reactions suggest that our physical bodies possess subtle cognitive awareness of their own electromagnetic patterns as represented by music.

Can we literally listen to the body? What messages might its rhythms and frequencies share? Might we hear patterns? Might they be beautiful? Even musical?

The question of whether our biology is harmonically ordered remains compelling. These forks can be a tool to explore this mysterious vibrational landscape. Four forks are tuned to the frequency of the four DNA base molecules.

Name Frequency
Adenine 545.6
Guanine 550
Thymine 543.4
Cytocine 537.8
