In adults, experimenters find there seems to be a natural sleep cycle whose periods last roughly one and one half hours. These cycles vary widely, but this is a good average.
After a sleeper enters that big slow wave sleep that I have mentioned, he/she seems to remain there for that period. After a time though the EEG begins to change.
During a period of approximately ten minutes, a sleeper will move up from stage four delta sleep through lighter and lighter stages. Eventually the sleeper will reach the light sleep of stage one. Most of the time this stage one sleep will again be modified into an even lighter stage called rapid eye movement, or REM sleep.
This is the stage of sleep when you have most of the dreams that you remember. It is actually a hypnotic state during which you are very close to wakefulness. Usually if you don’t begin to dream during this stage, you will wake up and wonder why you woke. I have shown many mothers and fathers how to take advantage of this state to give their young children suggestions that will modify bad habits and traits.
REM sleep is called that because during this stage the eyes move beneath the lids as if they are following movement. If sleepers are awakened during this phase and are questioned, they will invaribly say they have been dreaming. Dreams that occur during this stage of sleep seem to be the most vivid or at least the easiest to remember. There is evidence shown by the EEG that dreams do occur during deeper stages of sleep but they are harder to remember. It seems that in those deeper stages that we are farther away from physical reality. Is it necessary for us to have more than one type of sleep? The sleep laboratories aren’t ready to tell us yet, so we will turn to psychology and also the psychic sciences for possible answers.
Sleep scientists whose ranks include psychologists as well as neurologists have discovered that if sleepers are monitored and denied this REM sleep for a period of time that certain irregularities begin to occur. If this rem sleep denial is extended, these abnormalities could result in permanent damage. No one is certain if it is the dreams that are necessary, or just that portion of sleep in which dreams occur more vividly. Is it possible that during this period our consciousness is sort of clearing the circuits in preparation for another day? Is it also possible that during this period of sleep we are experiencing memories pulled at random from our unconscious? To me, neither of these things seems to be a good answer. The dreams that I have and those reported to me and in sleep laboratories bear little resemblance to memories of actual experiences. They do seem to be distortions of concerns that are present during our waking life. Some of them (at least in my case) involve communication with individuals that are no longer alive. For me dreamtime is very pleasurable. There are times in my dreams when I can will myself to lift up above other people in the dream and float there feeling rather smug that I can do so. Psychology would say that this is an attempt for the dreamer to elevate his standing amoung his peer group. Possibly, but it sure is fun.
In our dream state we can be aware of physical things, non-physical things, or both at the same time. I have had many occasions in which physical sounds are incorporated into my dreams. Sirenes, car horns and barking dogs seem to alter my dreams very rapidly to weave these sounds into the vision. Consciousness is awareness, but the unconscious state is still an area of awareness. At least in this REM stage.
I have said to my students many times that not only do a lot of dreams make no sense at all, but words and even sentences spoken during dreams also make very little sense.
Since I have a continuing intrest in dreams and consciousness, some time ago I wrote down an example. My alarm clock went off one morning and apparently roused me from a REM period of sleep. A dream and a portion of conversation were very fresh in my mind, so I wrote it down for later study. What I wrote was "gee Jeffrey did a boob suspicious thing." The only thing that makes any sense to me at all is the name Jeffery. I have a son by that name. As far as the rest of it, your guess is as good as mine.
Some (dreamers?) report out of body experiences during their sleep periods. Everyone who studies this phenomenon agree that an altered state of consciousness is necessary to achieve the separation from the confines of the body. It is highly possible that some sleepers use the various stages of sleep to accomplish this. These individuals always report that their floating body is always accompanied with a thin silver cord that stretches from their material body to their non-material body. It is my view that this cord is a visual representation of that spindal that is recorded during some stages of sleep. It indicates that the spiritual body is still in contact with and is responsible for the material body. While the spiritual (quantum) body is off on some adventure, it still must be able to check on the condition of the physical. Some travelers tell us that they become aware that if this silver cord were to become detached that the physical body would die. The spindle waves are very complex when they occur, which is an indication that there is a lot of information passing both ways through that silver cord.
To those of you who have had the occasion to observe a sleepwalker it will come as no surprise that they aren’t with us during those wanderings.Their mental state is akin to a medium stage of hypnosis, where some control of the body remains. The mind however is creating a world of its own. It is significant that sleepwalkers as a rule do not remember their escapades. This is not always the case, but most do not remember walking or talking. If we equate somnambulism with hypnosis, it is well to remember that only in the deepest states of hypnosis is an automatic memory loss observed. Not surprisingly somnambulism is derived directly from deep Delta or stage four sleep and then they move up to a somewhat lighter stage to allow their muscles to function.
During a twenty four hour period, each individual will go through many different stages of altered consciousness. Memory retrival, day dreaming, nighttime dreaming and problem solving are all various altered states. All of the various psychic sensitives use these various states to acquire information from the quantum realm of information.
